Dia de los Muertos 2006
Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), is an ancient Mexican and Latin American tradition where everyone is welcomed to celebrate the life of loved ones who have passed away. One such celebration is held every October in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Forever cemetery. This Dia de los Muertos celebration is the only one in the States which takes place in a cemetery with ancient traditions to honor the dead.
One challenge was to redesign the look of the festival and have it be transferable to many different pieces. Another challenge was to make the pieces bilingual for the English and Hispanic community.
The colours were chosen because they are most prominent in the festival. The orange respresents the flower of the festival, the orange marigold which is believed to guide the soul back to their loved ones. The black is representational of death and the more serious
part of the festival. Forms found in the Catholic, the Latin American and Aztec visual language are fused together, representing the flavor and spirit of the festival.
