After Midnight
After Midnight: How to Start a Sustainable Society Once The World Has Ended, is a book directed towards people who survived the end of the world, but really for everyone alive today.
The topic of sustainability is usually presented in a dry manner and targeted towards other scientist or designers (architects, industrial). The idea of sustainability should be targeted to the every day person. This is where After Midnight fills the void. It presents the subject in a way that does not preach. It does not say directly to stop doing what you are doing before the world ends. It states that the world has ended and addresses what happened. It's targeted toward the survivors of "the crash" and how they can rebuild using sustainable principles. The catch is that these sustainable principles work today.
The Book is separated into 3 Parts:
Chapter One: What Went Wrong.
Discusses the problem with the way our cities are structured. Fundamentally not following nature's number one rule: Sustainability.
Chapter Two: Don't Panic
Gives you tips on how to survive in a post apocalyptic environment. From self defense to how to kill your meal.
Chapter Three: Starting Anew
Focuses a lot on renewable energy and looking to nature for inspiration when starting anew.
The design is frantic and looks pieced together as if it was done in a rush, a last message before the world ended. The feeling is achieved by cutting up type, scanning, breaking the grid, photographing the screen etc. The following images are what came out of this experimental process.
